Keele University
Keele University is the UK’s largest integrated campus University, occupying a 617 acre estate in Staffordshire, with a total of 11,000 students, 1,700 staff on site, and 70% of undergraduates living on campus. The University is a bustling hive of activity with more than 100,000 visitors, guests and delegates enjoying the campus throughout the year at a variety of conferences and events.
Keele has always been at the forefront when implementing new and exciting technologies, and was one of the first Universities to introduce a campus wide contact-less smart card system across all their catering and retail outlets back in 1998. Known as ‘The Keele Card’ this multifunctional chip-card is used for I.D., library borrowing records and cashless payments in catering, retail, print and photocopying.

Fidelity in partnership with Magna Carta, were awarded a contract to update the existing campus-wide solution and improve the levels of service delivered by the existing ‘Keele Card’ through the integration of additional systems.
The scope of the contract included the commissioning of 47 touch screen EPoS terminals, equipped with smartcard readers and running Fidelity GPoS software over the estate of bars, cafeterias and shops. Each GPoS unit feeds back live sales data to Fidelity’s back office software – Total Control Premier which provides detailed reporting on turnover and profitability.
Additionally, seven wall mounted recharge stations were installed at strategic places around the campus, offering card holders the ability to 're-charge' their Keele card by means of cash or credit card. A further 27 chip card terminals were supplied for taking payments at photocopy and print stations throughout the campus.
Also the Facility Pro software suite was implemented to manage all card related tasks and functions. Post installation, this high level integration of applications and devices has enabled one team to administer the whole solution and utilise many of the systems features to maximum benefit;
- Multiple purses per card.
- Complex meal plan rules that refresh an allowance at a customisable frequency.
- Direct association of food products to meal purses.
- Tax, menu, discount, and promotion trigger by card holder.
- Real-time reporting of sales and stock.
Fidelity Systems have EPoS Solutions installed and operating in over eighty five Universities and Colleges throughout the UK, in cafeterias, restaurants, bars, and shops. Combining this strength with Magna Carta's skills has resulted in a powerful multi-application smart card solution for both commercial and education applications of any size.
